“We are more than friends but less a couple”.In the book Fahrenheit 451, the main character Montag lives in a lonely, isolating society and is now questioning the government and their actions behind burning books. He goes through a lot of obstacles along the way trying to decide if he still wants to be a fireman or run away from this even though there are consequences. On the other hand, in the namesake, the main character Gogol feels that his name is unusual and the Bengalis customs antagonize him.He decides to move to the American customs which then he realizes to stay with his identity. While both Montag and Gogol experience complicating relationships with their spouses, both lack communication, whereas Montag and Mildred lack love and gain space. In the novels, Fahrenheit 451 and the namesake both main characters produce a complicating relationship with their spouses causing major changes as a result.Montag and Mildred waiting for Beatty to come when Montag asks:”Millie? Does the White Clown love you?” No answer.”Millie, does—” He licked his lips. “Does your ‘family’ love you, love you very much, love you with all their heart and soul, Millie?” ((Bradbury 73).What this quote is expressing is how they really don’t love each other because Mildred never answers back.It also shows that she feels lonely in a way because she cannot express her full emotions. In the same manner, Gogol is having a difficult relationship with Moushumi because she would rather hang out with her friends than Gogol.Gogol has suspicions in his head about Mo and her friends and why she needs to be always with them saying, “Gogol has been to the house before, a bit too frequently in his opinion…She has ignored Nikhil perhaps more than necessary…”(Lahari 235-247).This is supporting how she is a French teacher who feels unsatisfying with her relationship. She takes the unsatisfiedness into hanging out with her friends to ignore her husband. In short, they both share a hard relationship that involves no attraction, no love or space, and not knowing one another as there spouse. In the namesake, Gogol and Moushumi show a lack of communication in contrast in Fahrenheit 451, Montag and Mildred lack communication methods. While Gogol and Moushumi are at Astrid and Donald’s party everyone talks about baby name’s when Moushumi brings up Gogol’s name and he begins to say in his head: “Suddenly he regrets having ever told Moushumi; he wonders whether she’ll proclaim the story of her father’s accident to the table as well…This is what upsets him the most.”(Lahari 244).In the quote is shows how Gogol begins not wanting to trust Mousumi and that ends in a lack of communication together.Another thing is that the lack of communication will strain their marriage because of the things he couldn’t dare tell her like her friends or her actions that she had made that night. In comparison, Montag and Mildred have a lack of communication because instead of talking and working it out they begin arguing. While Mildred and Montag are waiting for Beatty they begin to argue: “Let me alone,” said Mildred. “I didn’t do anything.” “Let you alone! That’s all very well, but how can I leave myself alone? We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while…”(Bradbury ). When they say they need to bother each other for a while it shows how they maybe do this on a daily basis. This is also showing how Montag is discontent with the response Mildred gives to him and how she doesn’t feel any sympathy for the burnt woman, so it makes it harder for them to understand each other when they are always arguing. They both show a lack of communication in many ways that ruin the love relationshipIn Fahrenheit 451, Montag and Mildred show a lack of love and space because they are never together and they don’t do things together like it was for Gogol and Moushumi in the beginning. When they are in the house Montag and Mildred are conversing when Mildred wants a 4th wall: “….It’ll be even more fun when we can afford to have a the fourth wall installed. How long you figure before we save up and get the fourth wall torn out and a fourth wall-TV put in? It’s only two thousand dollars.” “That’s only a one – third of my yearly pay.”(Bradbury 18).This proves how Mildred cannot live without her parlor walls, how they are not close, and they lack so much love and always have space for each other. It also shows that Montag is just another person in her life that she did not care for. Moreover, Gogol and Mo don’t lack love in the beginning of their dating life and were always inseparable. As Gogol is walking home he realizes: “…to be attracted to her in the least. It strikes him that there is no term for what they once were to each other”(Lahari 199).For the most part, Mildred and Montag lack love and gain space from each other which is different on how Gogol and Moushumi are in their dating and marital life. In the two stories, Fahrenheit 451 and the namesake, both Montag and Gogol have knowledge of knotty relationships with their spouses, also both having lack of communication and Montag and Mildred lacking love and gaining space. These two novels relate to the outside world because many couples deal with these relationships and sometimes can relate to both novels outcomes in the end.Given these points, people should follow their heart.
