To: Riley CassidyFrom: Hast GoyalSub: What effect dosocial media have on our general happiness?Date: 12thDecember 2017——————————————————————————————————————————–Before I put light on the relationship between social mediaand happiness I would like to define social media. Social media sites or apps(like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Whatsapp etc.
) are specially designedfor people to stay connected with friends, with their loved ones, and thepeople from the rest of the world. In short, now we can talk to anybody in theworld anytime. However, social media helps connect people.
Even though questionremains are people really happy now? As a part of my college assignment, I amgoing to explain “the effects of social media on our happiness” through some ofmy research on this subject.According to my research on different sites on google, Ifound that social media, instead of making people’s lives better, is addictive.According to Washington.com, people spend an average 6 hours on social mediaper day and this number increases in younger people, which is not good fortheir social lives. A report on google states that people who usually update theirstatuses all the time feel pain in their fingers while writing something.
Inthis era, the new generation is smarter than the older generation but evenafter that they give more importance to their virtual lives than the real life.Example: People create groups to stay in touchwith their friends and other near and dear ones on social sites and apps butwhen they meet them in person they do not have anything to talk about and liketo stay engaged on their phones or other portable electronic devices. In myopinion social media is decreasing people’s quality of lives by making themless socialized. Also the use social media forces people to stay close tocharging ports so that they can use their phones without running out of batterywhich is quite similar to an animal tied with a rope. On the other side social media also has a lot of benefitslike sharing good and beneficial information which is good for users. It helpsin circulating news quickly as compared to other sources.
The most importantthing is that it is free for all so everyone can take advantage of it bysharing and receiving information. As part of this college assignment, I researched theadvantages and disadvantages of social media. Effects of social media on ourhappiness are clear given its advantages and disadvantages. Advantages of SocialMedia· Connectivity: Today’s generation is smarter.
Theywant to stay connected with everyone regardless of location and region. Thebenefit of social media is that you can connect with anyone from everywhere tolearn and share. · Awareness: Social Media helps people innovatethe way they live. It helps people discover new stuff to enhance their lives. From students to professionals, engineers to doctors, farmers to teachers, everyone can take advantage of social media to make themselves aware ofinnovations. · Information and updates: Social media helps people to stayinformed and updated.
It circulates information faster as compared to othersources like television or print media. · Develops professional skills: With the use of social media you canenhance your personal and professional skills. You can interact withprofessionals from various fields.Social media does have positive impacts on human life, butmost of the time we forget to acknowledge the negative side of socialnetworking.
Apart from having advantages, social media has disadvantages also.According to a report, out of all the time spent online, 42% is spent viewingcontent online, 22% on social networking, and 36% is spent on other activitieslike emails, searches etc. According toanother report, 48% of people check Facebook after going to bed, 49% ofteenagers are interrupted while eating, and 61% of teenagers have to checkfacebook at least once a day(https://techgage.com/news/how_is_our_time_spent_online/),(http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/internet-usage-statistics_n_620946).· Cyberbullying: Increased use of social media hasraised a threat of cyberbullying. According to reports on the internet, mostchildren and teens have become victims to cyberbullying.
· Health issues: One of the negative impacts of socialmedia is on our health due to excessive usage. It brings disorder in our dailyroutine as many people get lazy due to the excessive usages of networkingsites. · Increases anti-social behavior: However people want to stay connectedwith their loved ones and rest of the world.
When they meet with these people in real life they don’t have anythingto talk about. People get extensively involved in social media and areeventually cut off from the rest of society. · Lack of privacy: People share their personalinformation on social networking sites. It makes them easy target for hackersand stalkers. Identity theft is another problem for people who get extensivelyinvolved on social media.
In conclusion, I think the social media has negative andpositive aspects. It depends of every individual which way they choose to use it.Social media is not a bad thing if used in a right way. The fact is that mostof the users do not use social media the way it should be used and this leadsto addiction to social media.
Social media addiction has a solution. Finally, in spite of its negative effects, social media ishere to stay. It is necessary for people to educate themselves and the nextgeneration on the negative effects of social media along with positive effects.
As said by Erik Qualman”We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how wellwe do it”. (http://www.azquotes.com/quote/679648) Source: The data is collected from different websites ongoogle
