To Whom It May Concern:

My journey to civil engineering started from my interests
in science. Driven by the curiosity towards the science behind the engineering
I went to the Republic Specialized Physics and Mathematics High School in
Almaty, Kazakhstan, where I mastered mathematics and physics. Together with my
aspiration to make a better society, I was ambitious to become a structural engineer.
An academic preparation at Nazarbayev University, research on structural and
geotechnical engineering, and field experience prepared me to pursue an
advanced degree in structural engineering at Columbia University.

After the completion of my current studies, I plan to
pursue the master’s degree, start working in Kazakhstan as a structural
engineer and to develop its construction industry. For this, I gained a solid
background in civil engineering and studied core structural engineering
courses. In order to become more qualified, I am narrowing my specialty to the
structural engineering in the master’s degree. My undergraduate study is
English-based and oriented on the American building standards such as ASCE 7
and PCI, which will simplify my learning process in the USA. Furthermore, I
improved teamwork skills by performing group projects in the undergraduate
program and by conducting research at Korean Advanced Institute of Science and
Technology (KAIST), Republic of Korea. In addition, I honed leadership skills
in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2018 competition, where I was a team leader and
responsible for the team management. Due to good governance, teamwork, and
persistence, my team and I are the first Kazakhstani team that passed a
three-phase rigorous selection of the competition organized by Royal Dutch
Shell Plc. In the master’s degree, teamwork and leadership skills will be
useful for collaboration with other students at the university as well as for
an interaction with colleagues in the construction industry in the future.
Moreover, practice in the construction company gave me a clear vision of a
structural engineer’s role, which reinforced my desire to choose this specialty.
The industry in Kazakhstan experienced during the internship is different from
the civil engineering studied at the university, so I will have great
opportunities for the industry development later. By investigating this problem
in the master’s degree, I will be able to enhance the Kazakhstani industry significantly.

In the postgraduate study at Columbia University, I am
eager to conduct research on structural health monitoring. I am interested in
this topic because the health monitoring will be a crucial problem for
Kazakhstan in future decades. The problem is that with a rapid growth of
buildings’ quantity in Kazakhstan in addition to the existing constructions,
risks of accidents increase, which can be prevented by proper monitoring. Columbia
University offers unique opportunities for these endeavors, namely leading
faculty members and the SMaRT Laboratory dedicated to the health monitoring. For
the research in this field, my knowledge of civil engineering, principles of sensors,
data processing, and data analysis gained during the research experience at
Nazarbayev University and KAIST, and computer skills such as ANSYS Mechanical
APDL and COMSOL Multiphysics will be useful. In addition, the experience of the
international research team and cultural exchange in KAIST prepared me for
working in the research on a worldwide level. Therefore, I am qualified for
conducting the research on the health monitoring at Columbia University. By virtue
of the research, I will cooperate with other disciplines, make publications and
contribute to the program. After the investigation of the health monitoring in
the master’s degree, I will implement an up-to-date solution in the Kazakhstani
construction industry.

I am highly motivated to study structural engineering in
Civil Engineering & Engineering Mechanics Department at Columbia University
at the City of New York. My personal characteristics, undergraduate education, civil
engineering research, and real-life experience prepared me for the master’s
degree. I intend to continue my research path in the health monitoring where is
tremendous opportunities of putting academic knowledge into practice. I believe
that I will advance your university by research and publications. I intend to
fulfill my goal to create a better society when start working as a structural
