Throughout the years, more and more children are being diagnosed with a disorder called attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. This disorder affects children and  drastically and it can continue into adulthood. Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder may be hyperactive and unable to control their impulses, or they may have trouble paying attention. Although more children have been diagnosed with ADHD, a greater question arises. How reliable are all of the diagnoses made by psychiatrist. In recent years a greater effect has lied upon the Misdiagnosing of children as having ADHD and the grave consequences that it holds upon them.   Experts worldwide  in child and family studies,  question whether increasing numbers of children really are suffering from debilitating mental disorders.  A large new study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics suggests the primary cause of the increase of autism spectrum disorder is actually due to changes in how the disease is diagnosed. Some researchers followed 677,915 Danish children born between 1980 and 1991 and tracked them until they either had an autism diagnosis or reached the study end date of Dec. 31, 2011. Hansen and his team looked specifically at changes that occurred before and after the year in 1994, when criteria for psychiatric diagnoses changed in Denmark so that ADHD became a spectrum of disorders, broadening the criteria for diagnosis. The researchers found significantly more children were diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. in 1995 and on, and the team was able to determine that 60% of the increase could be attributed to these criteria changes. “This study is important because it shows a large part of the increase has nothing to do with the environment, but rather administrative decisions,” says study author Stefan Hansen of Aarhus University in Denmark. It has also been found that the youngest children in the classroom are misdiagnosed  with ADHD not because they may have ADHD, but rather because they are the most immature in the classroom.Another study was taken according to the USA Today and the New York Times, with the consumption of medication given to patients that have ADHD. In the study, it was apparent that kids with ADHD  suffered with their math test scores dropping by  more than three points a year. It was also found by USA Today, that after three years on ADHD medication, the dosage levels have been raised to an average of 41 percent, due to the body building tolerance to it, and  the child is on average 0.79 inches shorter and 6 lbs lighter than children with no medications. Other effects of taking medication for ADHD would be that  Children and teens are seven times more likely to die suddenly than their peers. Taking this medication acts as a great barrier because it impacts people permanently on their career choices as well and they may be disqualified for certain jobs such as, military personnel, law enforcement positions, or becoming a pilot. ADHD medication also causes a malfunction in the brain for children and drugs such as adderall and concerts are reported by the FDA to cause stunted growth, insomnia, and hallucination. With that being said, experts have concluded that children being diagnosed with ADHD and placed on prescribed drugs can have grave consequences and may further complicate the child’s educational experience  In continuation, everyone being diagnosed with ADHD that are treated with prescribed drugs in order to lessen the effects of the disorder, are treated with high dosages. Unfortunately, stimulants have their drawbacks and it always isn’t the best route to take. For example, stimulants are among the most commonly abused prescription medications by university students. In children with or without ADHD, these medications may cause: restlessness, shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping and staying asleep, changes in sex drive, and chest pain.Being misdiagnosed with this disorder has more than just an educational effect on people. Being labeled as having ADHD can result in self stigmatization. Many children that are passing through adolescence and are growing into their personalities may believe that their faith is to not succeed in life, due to their current misdiagnosis. Unfortunately, some teachers also give up in some of these kids, thinking that they are helpless in the brain.  Although many different options are being taken into action in order to reduce the amount of kids with ADHD  as well as the amount of kids being misdiagnosed, it is undoubtedly very costly. In 2010, Thirty-eight to seventy-two billion dollars were spent on children with ADHD. The annual cost for each individual person came out to about $1,574. This amount of money is incredibly difficult to come up with for an average family. Some families don’t have to pay this treatment out of their pocket, but healthcare plans such as medicaid, have to obtain this money from somewhere. Most of this money that is being paid by health care plans is funded by taxes. This is a problem to society because so many misdiagnoses are occurring worldwide and an immense amount of money is being funded towards children that may not even possess actual ADHD.   Misdiagnosing children as having ADHD may also mask other serious psychiatric issues, such as anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, learning disabilities, or bipolar disorder, to name a few. These children are placed on powerful medications with many potential side effects, including being addictive. ADHD is found to affect individuals beyond childhood and into adulthood, and has potential long-term consequences for education, health and general well-being. Given these potential negative outcomes, it is essential that ADHD is diagnosed and treated to mitigate these risks. There is however, also significant concern for overdiagnosis followed by unnecessary medicating, with associated risk for side effects
