This book is mostly made up of humour,
and is mistaken by some as nonsense however as Lewis Carrol intended it , it
was a book meant not for direct lessons, he has placed hidden meanings throughout
the book, in every character and how they interact with Alice. Humour in this
book is meant to be experienced through the nonsense, which the author does so

In this essay, as expected of me I will
identify the humour in the book and try link a relevant meaning to it, and will
express overall if the humour to me was indeed humour or rather just
meaningless nonsense.

Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland is a book that is playing with the rules of language, logic and
representation, as the book unravels we see Alice fall down a rabbit hole, now
in real life that cannot possible be possible for a grown human to possible fit
down such a small whole and at this point is where the humour starts for me as
the rules of logic and normality start to shift.

Alice comes in counter with a situation
that she is trying to get back into the garden funny enough a girl in a strange
land she decides to help herself to the liquid in the bottle that was not there
before and before she knows it. She has been shrunk and is now too small to get
out, she finds a cake that might   make her grow taller or even shorter but out
off impatience and need for instant results she eats it all and regrets it
shortly when she has grown too much. This example is a paradox to real life ,
we are so impatient and are never satisfied with the way things are going so we
try take short cuts and normally end up in a worse off position than we
started, ” she ate a little bit and said anxiously to herself, which way which
way?.”P10. She was quite surprised to find out that she remained the same
size. It seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in a common way, so she
set to work and very soon finished off the cake.”p13 this exacerbates her
confusion over her identity she ends up far too tall and still has not resolved
her problem she gets the key but cannot get in the garden, events unfold and
she ends up questioning herself “who in the world am I?P13.

As the plot unravels and we further get
exposed to the humour  we meet different characters,
The blue Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts- to
name only a few of them- are all characterized by human features that  have different traits. They can talk,
rationalize, interact; they have habits as smoking, drinking tea. Even Time is
a person. The question that follows is that what exactly is Lewis Carrol trying
to portray through this madness, we know that Alice has failed to find meaning
in Wonderland and hopes that she will find logic but at the same time us
readers we derive humour from all this. From analysis Alice is in a dream that
she cannot  control by walking up and it
shows us as well in real life that we are also sometimes trapped in our own
wonderlands that we desperately try find meaning out of but just fail, which is
the paradox of life.

line that particularly got me laughing is when the mock turtle and the
Gryphon mock Alice for not understanding what essentially is nonsense the
conversation goes like so, “When we were still little “we went to
school in the sea.P95.” The master was an old Turtle we used to call him
Tortoise “Why did you call him Tortoise, if he wasn’t one?” Alice
asked.”We called him Tortoise because he taught us,” said the Mock
Turtle angrily. “Really you are dull!””You ought to be ashamed
of yourself for asking such a simple question,”P96, added the Gryphon; and
then they both sat silent and looked at poor Alice, who felt ready to sink into
the earth. (Insert quote) This play on foolish words and the inclusion of ,
nonsensical facts, and other characters’  may be way to try mock the  Victorian English  kind of education, we laugh at the miss
understanding between the Turtle and Alice but this could also be a mock to the
education system in the Victorian era.

However the humour
pervaded in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is not altogether crazy, the
characters themselves employ logic as well on one occasion when Alice becomes
very tall, she encounters a Pigeon who mistakes her for a serpent. Alice claims
to be a little girl, but the Pigeon does not believe her:

“A likely story indeed!” said
the Pigeon, in a tone of the deepest contempt. “I’ve seen a good many
little girls in my time, but never one with such a neck as that! No, no! You’re
a serpent; and there’s no use denying it. I suppose you’ll be telling me next
that you never tasted an egg!””I have tasted eggs, certainly,”
said Alice, who was a very truthful child; “but little girls eat eggs
quite as much as serpents do, you know.”I don’t believe it,” said the
Pigeon; “but if they do, why then they’re a kind of serpent: that’s all I
can say.”P49-Chapter5 In a way the pigeon was saying that if little girls
eat eggs, then they are a kind of serpents, but that is a stretch.

The humour I have tried to identify has
all different meaning and evokes very different reactions in the readers; this
is a good way of trying to captivate the readers into reading more. As
identification of such craziness further evolves so does the readers want to
read more.
