The computing innovation I chose to explore is Google Classroom. According to jordan Catapano from TeachHub.com “Google Classroom’s purpose is to facilitate paperless communication between teachers and students and streamline educational workflow.”(1) Google Classrooms intended function is when the teacher creates an assignment it then consumes the data and sends it to all students registered within the class producing a post that can be seen by all students with the press of a single button.I used Powtoon to create the video for computational artifact. I put together a few animation slides that added to my explanation by using text boxes and props. Then I recorded my voice to explain the purpose, function and effects of google classroom. One of the beneficial effects of google classroom is even if a student doesn’t have a computer google classroom can be accessed virtually any devices with internet access. This affects the culture within our society because there are devices that can access the internet everywhere nowadays, instead of carrying around an agenda or extra notebook all assignments can be easily accessed with due dates and requirements. One harmful effect of google classroom is that teachers have begun to just post the entire class online instead of teaching in class. As stated by Alice Keeler on Teacher Tech. ” Trying to take all your paper stuff and dump it online is hard to manage, confusing and does not improve learning one tiny bit.”(2) As stated from a fellow Teacher, Google Classroom is hard to manage and confusing. This has a negative effect on society because if Google Classroom is confusing and hard to manage for the teacher the students grade will surely suffer.Google Classroom mostly uses data in the form of text which is typed onto a document that is either being made by the teacher or provided by the teacher for the student. The input would be said text (as they type) used as an announcement or assignment. Google Classroom then transforms the text using previously set algorithms and makes a link which produces a post to send to all of the students within the class. One data privacy concern is the fact that while logged into an educational account on any google app (including classroom) they can record previously visited websites and create advertising profiles for students. “based on all the publicly available information we could find, it appeared that Google was tracking students and building advertising profiles on them when they navigated to Google-operated sites outside of Google Apps for Education (GAFE).”(4) Catapano, Jordan. “Technology in the Classroom: A Look at Google Classroom.”TeachHUB, www.teachhub.com/technology-classroom-look-google-classroom.Keeler, Alice. “Impact Learning with Google Classroom.” Teacher Tech, 20 Oct. 2017, www.alicekeeler.com/2017/08/05/get-started-google-classroom/.Gebhart, Gennie. ” School-Issued Devices and Student Privacy.” Electronic Frontier Foundation, 6 June 2017, www.eff.org/wp/school-issued-devices-and-student-privacy.Cope, Jeremy Gillula and Sophia. “Google Changes Its Tune When It Comes to Tracking Students.” Electronic Frontier Foundation, 6 Oct. 2016, www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/10/google-changes-its-tune-when-it-comes-tracking-students.Artifact:https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS780US780&biw=1600&bih=769&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=TQRqWvSXA4f4zgLjl5GIBw&q=positive+sociatal+effects&oq=positive+sociatal+effects&gs_l=psy-ab.3…384245.397170.0.3979220.127.116.11.18.104.22.168.1446.18j2.20.0….0…1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.15.790…0j0i67k1j0i13k1.0.pTPyVBkRuZ4&safe=active&ssui=on#imgrc=ie2QOjnifvdfwM:https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS780US780&biw=1600&bih=769&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=2wVqWsOIIIOhzwKK44igDg&q=googleclassroom&oq=googleclassroom&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0l2j0i10i24k1l8.214010.221447.0.221822.214.171.124.126.96.36.199.945.12j1.13.0….0…1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.17.972…0i67k1j0i10k1j0i24k1j0i13k1.0.urwLZ9q-Lzw&safe=active&ssui=on#imgrc=sWc3Ko31gvyIRM:”About Classroom – Classroom Help.” Google, Google, support.google.com/edu/classroom/answer/6020279?hl=en.
