The legalization of marijuana in
states has raised the question of if byproducts from the marijuana industry can
be fed to cattle. If the byproducts can be fed to cattle, are there benefits of
feeding it, such as increasing feed intake of cattle.

The European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology describes
endocannabinoids as a system regulating learning and memory, regulating food
intake, and controlling inflammation and pain (Hansen et al., 2006). Examples
of endocannabinoids include anandamide and 2-arachidonyl-glycerol (Artegoitia
et al., 2016). High levels of endocannabinoids affect the calcium channels and implantation
is compromised (Abolghasemi et al., 2016). High levels of endocannabinoids can
inhibit corpus luteum, causing a loss of pregnancy (Abolghasemi et al., 2016). The
endocannabinoid, anandamide, has been shown to correlate with the elongation of
the conceptus (Ribeiro et al., 2016). However, when anandamide is broken down and
arachidonic acid is produced and helps form prostaglandin that could harm the
pregnancy (Ribeiro et al., 2016). Another study showed evidence of
endocannabinoids contributing to the regulation of the pancreas maturing into a
functional adult pancreas (Dall’Aglio et al., 2017). One study researched the
trend of the number of endocannabinoids in plasma with dry matter intake, body
weight gain, and carcass composition in finishing steers (Artegoitia et al.,
2016). Higher concentration of anandamide correlated with grain to finish ratio,
these more efficient cattle were also lean but didn’t compromise marbling (Artegoitia
et al., 2016).

Feed byproducts containing endocannabinoids
to cattle that are being fed out to finish because of the increased feed
efficiency. However, do not feed to breeding cattle because of the consequences
of the conceptus not implanting and production of prostaglandin that could hard
the pregnancy.
