three books I chose to read are: The
Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom, The
Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs, and The Autobiography of Malcom X. I chose these books because I felt I
could learn something different from each of them. I will mainly focus on The Hiding Place and The Year of Living Biblically, and briefly
tell my thoughts on The Autobiography of
Malcom X.

remember discussing Corrie Ten Boom in Sunday school as a child. We would read
short stories about her, talk about her life, and why she was so significant. That
was long ago, and I had forgotten about Corrie Ten Boom, until now. When
reading about such a great historical figure, it can be easy to forget about
the hardships. Corrie Ten Boom did not only do many Jews a great service by
hiding them, but she was severely punished for that good deed. Corrie Ten Boom
was a Christian who is now a great inspiration to me, because I am also a
Christian. She has demonstrated such perseverance in her faith. She never lost
sight of God, and even prayed for forgiveness for those who wronged her and the
Jews.1 She made me think about the moment when Jesus was on the cross,
and He prayed “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.2”

of her faith, I believe she could be and should be an inspiration to all people.
She went into great detail of her life, and let me see her true character. Most
people are searching for something to give them hope, faith, or a “light at the
end of the tunnel,” and she had that.

The next book I chose to read, The Year of Living Biblically, was as interesting
as it sounds. The title drew me in; I knew I wanted to find out what it was
about. Again, I am a Christian, and I have always wondered things like why we do
not seem to think it is bad to have our ears pierced. The Bible does mention not piercing the body.2
With that being said, I can appreciate the determination to completely
follow the Bible. Something interesting to note about A.J. Jacobs and his
story, is that he was not a devout Christian or a part of any religion before
he started this journey. He was confused and unsure about what he did believe
and what he should believe. This part is very relatable to me personally, because
I have been in that position, as many people have. I have wondered what is real
and what is not. Jacobs was not necessarily trying to follow one religion in
particular, but follow the Bible.

            I really enjoyed Jacobs giving
literally every detail of the day from beginning to end. I loved that he was
serious about following the Bible literally, but it was also humorous, because
clearly this would flip your life upside down a bit.

Finally, I read The Autobiography of Malcom X. Before reading this book, I knew how
great Malcom X was, but I had no idea what he had been through to the extent he
had. I am always inspired by people who have overcome great challenges. Malcom
X is someone I can

relate to, but
also can not relate to at the same time. I understand what it is like to grow
up with little money and the challenges that faces.

2. Holy Bible:
King James Version. Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers, 2012.

He faced so much
more, he faced racism and cruelty. With his upbringing and experiencing racism,
he let himself go downhill.

He was doing drugs,
went to prison, but then he turned his life around. I have such respect for anyone
that does this. He went even further and became an activist for the Black
community and Black Muslims. I feel that he is such a respectable man for the life
he lived.

Overall, these are books I may not
have read without this course. These books offer something different, and can
mean different things to different people. I found these books very interesting.
I really enjoyed the inspirational stories of Corrie Ten Boom and Malcom X, and
especially enjoyed A.J. Jacobs crazy experience following the Bible.
