Shailesh R Singh is an independant Indian filmmaker and producer.
He initially worked as an apprentice and pursued his dream to become a
producer. Coming from a small town in Jaunpur, he was asked to focus on studies
mainly. But Shailesh was not interested in studies and was passionate about
cricket and movies. In an interview, he said that he would travel 12 to 15
kilometres just to watch a movie.
Shailesh’s story on how he pursued his passion sounds like
a story out of a movie. He ran away from home at the age of 15 with nothing but
a sports magazine and 400 rupees in hand. He reached Mumbai and decided to
train rigorously in cricket. He later understood that cricket was doing him no
good and was not providing him a decent pay.
He returned home and went back to Mumbai after a few years
to apprentice with Mansoor Khan on ‘Akele Hum Akele Tum’. He left no stone
unturned and even worked in television by writing episodes for shows like ‘Choodiyan’,
‘Rishtey’. Even though we was doing what he loved, he was still not happy with
the remuneration he was getting. In 2005, he hit a pot of gold when he met Onir
and produced his first movie ‘Bas Ek Pal’. He expressed his bond with Onir and
states that he was very supportive of Shailesh. When he wanted to present ‘Tanu
Weds Manu’ in 2011, nobody wanted to back him up. He decided that he should
produce it and since then it has been a wonderful journey for him. He teamed up
with Kangana Ranaut in the lead and worked on Manmarziyan.
In an excerpt from an interview, he says he chooses
storylines which touch the audience’s hearts and has an interesting story to
tell. With many movies in his kitty, Shailesh has his hands full with Bejoy
Nambiar’s next movie with actor Dhanush in the lead. Director Aanand L Rai is full
of praise for Shailesh. He says Shailesh is like his brother and they often
bounce off ideas to each other. He is a very focused person and knows what kind
of movies he would like to deal with. He is very passionate about cinema.
Shailesh also had a talk with the real-life couple
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhisesh Bachchan regarding teaming up for his new
movie. They will be portraying the roles of married IPS officers. His upcoming
movie ‘Garbage’ is set to premiere at the 68th International Film
Festival at Berlin.
