Quentin Tarantino is a movie director that was born March 27, 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee. His parents, Connie McCugh and Tony Tarantino divorced shortly before he was born, after he was born, he and his mother moved from Knoxville to Los Angeles. This is where Connie met her second husband. His mother did not shelter his young mind from violent or inappropriate movies, which is probably a reason why he exhibits drugs and violence into his movies. His mother was divorced again in 1973 and was diagnosed with lymphoma, and died later that year, and he was sent back to Tennessee to live with his grandparents. From the 70s to 90s, crime movies dominated the box office. From “The Godfather” in 1972, to “Menace II Society” in 1993, Quentin had tons of inspiration for his movies. This was a very controversial time for movies. Many people did not enjoy these movies, because of the violent nature of these movies we consider classics. In the 60’s, drugs were starting to become a problem, and in the 70’s, nothing changed. Since he was not sheltered, he knew about all of these things, and drugs are the subjects of many of his movies. In 1992, Tarantino wrote, directed, and acted in “Reservoir Dogs” this movie was called “the best independent film of all time” by Empire Magazine, after it grossed 2.8 million dollars from a 1.2 million dollar budget. This movie featured crime, violence, and profanity, heavily debated. His next movie “Pulp Fiction” starring John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and Tarantino himself, is considered one of the top 10 movies of all time, although it exhibits mature topics just like many of his other movies. But the controversy shown by these movies did not stop Tarantino from continuing to create these movies. In 1996, he wrote and featured in “From Dusk Till Dawn” starring George Clooney, and Quentin Tarantino which has heavy sexual and criminal content. From there, he continued to make these inappropriate movies. His 8th movie, released December 2015, “The Hateful 8” a modern day western, still contained adult content after 20 years of controversy.Quentin Tarantino also is a strong voice outside of Hollywood, he protests many problems to the public in protests and the press. He protests racism, police brutality, and the use of the Confederate Flag in America. Many may think that he is a racist because of the content of his movies, but his movies are actually protesting racism, for example, in the movie “Django Unchained” he is voicing his opinions on slavery to his fans, he also does the same thing to protest anti-semitism in “Inglorious Basterds”.Quentin Tarantino shows several IB learner traits, but those that shine the most would be Risk-Taker and Open-Minded. He is a risk-taker because he experimented with several different film techniques, such as an unsteady timeline, scenes featuring anime, and movies containing chapters, he also has content in his movies that he knew would be hated by the public, such as drugs, sex, racism, and anti-semitism. He shows that he is Open-Minded by continuing to write original screenplays that have won him 4 Oscars. He also has discovered some of today’s most beloved actors such as Samuel L. Jackson and Tim Roth.It is important to know who Quentin Tarantino is because he has made very classic movies that are referenced very often, so it is good to know these references. Some of his movies also deliver good messages that people can learn from to benefit their lives. Such as Samuel L. Jackson says in Pulp Fiction (a paraphrased version of Ezekiel 25:17) “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon you.” After that, he gives an explanation of what it means that I cannot put in this essay, but essentially it means that god may be cruel, but only to those who threaten his followers.
