Personal leadership style, ability, and skills. There are several leadership styles one can adapt as theirown. “Leadership is defined as the process to influence people toaccomplish goals” (Huber, 2014, p.4). My own leadershipphilosophy closely resembles the democratic leadership style. Northhouse (2018)explains the democratic leaders as one who “provide information, guidance andsuggestions, without giving orders or applying pressure.” (p.
85). As a nursing professional I do not believe in micromanagingor being a dictator. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are thecornerstones of the nursing profession, thus eliminating the need forinflexibility. An effective leader possesses certain abilities and skills thatmake them successful. In my opinion, my own personal ability and skill setincludes: inspiring others, innovation, adaptability, trustworthiness, dependability, empathy, perceptive and fairness.
Qualities or traits an effective leader possesses.Leadersdemonstrate connection and relationship through their empathy for others. Inthis empathy, leaders have a finely-honed ability to find the very best inpeople rather than focusing on the worst in them (Kowalski & Yoder-Wise,2003).
Northhouse (2018) lists several traits especiallyimportant for effective leadership: intelligence, confidence, charisma, determinations, sociability and integrity (p.35). The personal skills and abilities I possess can all beconnected to the traits mentioned by Northhouse. Empathy plays a role insociability. Innovation is a trait of intelligence. Adaptability and beingperceptive to change can be viewed as a quality of determination.
Beingtrustworthy, fair and dependable is a characteristic of integrity. Lastly, inspiring others is a behavior indicative of both charisma and confidence.Someone who is confident in their ability is more likely to inspire andmotivate others to achieve their personal goals. Traits model vs process/skills models.I theorize thatleadership style can be both learned and a natural ability some individuals encompass.Nevertheless, I consider the process/skill model of leadership as the elite ofthe two. It is important to recognize that skills canbe developed through training and education.
However, to achieve mastery in anyskill, engagement and action is required. (Johnson, 2013, p.186).
Asindicated by Modic, Hancock, and Fitzpatrick (2017): Nurses who have the opportunity toexplore leadership practices, discuss leadership aspirations, and fosterrelationships with other nurses across a health care system will feel valued, validated, and invigorated to continue to investigate opportunities to developtheir best professional selves. The three domains of leadership skill. The three domains of skill are administrative, interpersonal, and conceptual. Although all three are significant, I argue thatthe conceptual domain, analytical and problem-solving, is superior.Problem-solving skills are essential for effective leadership (Northhouse,2018, p126). In my opinion, when presented with a crisis the ability to thinkanalytically outweighs “people” skills and job knowledge. Northouse (2018)advocates that conceptual type leaders do not sit idly by when there areproblems, they are quick to identify problems and explore possible answers.
The biggest mistake a leader makes.Iconsider being unauthentic and putting self-interest ahead of everything else,as being the two biggest mistakes made by leaders. According to Grossman(2008), great leaders should exemplify traits of straightforwardness, care and compassion, confidence, loyalty, be motivational, a risk taker, a decisions maker, andreliable. In present times creating a positive environment and cultivating anengaged workforce are more important than ever. (Dans, Pabico, Tate, & Hume, 2017).Theterm “authentic”, in my judgement, means transparency.
To me it is about beingcompletely open, honest and genuine. Corey (2016) emphasizes, “if you hidebehind your role the client will also hide”, being authentic means taking themask off and being vulnerable. Personal characteristics I deems essentialfor authenticity would include being open, honest, receptive, interested, moral, ethical and empathetic.
