When there are young people struggling with depression, anxiety or any other mental illness they tend to feel iscolated and alone without knowing how to deal with any of these complicated feelings they have. So they turn to media outlets, looking for anything to relate to or otherwise distract themselves with. Many artists struggle with this as well, thinking they are in no position to have mental health issues because of their publicity or celebrity status. Logic is a rapper who recently opened up about his personal experience with severe anxiety and depression. Recognizing his huge platform and influence on people, he decided to take a huge risk in writing a song about suicide prevention. It is common for someone as popular as logic to receive messages from fans saying that his music helped them get through hard times and even saved their life.

During an interview with the Washington Post, Logic explains “In my mind, I was like, ‘Man I wasn’t even trying to save anybody’s life,'” he said. “And then it hit me – the power that I have as an artist with a voice. I wasn’t even trying to save your life. Now what could happen if I actually did?” Logic realized how inflencial he is and how he can use his platform for something extraordinary. Having experience with suicidal thoughts and other mental health problems, he felt even more compelled to make this song. He also recognized the sensitivity that is attached to this topic. The song itself follows the story of someone being tormented with suicidal thoughts and wanting to act on them.

The person calls the suicide hotline as a cry for help, and the help comes. The person on the other end of the line is trying to calm them down and help them see that suicide is not the answer. The song ends with the suicidal person realizing that they no longer want to die and that everything will be okay. No amount of words can explain how well this song is written. Its not just singing about suicide, it’s about suicide prevention. “It’s not just about the calls; it’s about prevention in particular. The calls don’t even begin to count the number of people who, just by listening to the song and hearing the lyrics, feel more helpful and less alone.

There really is no measuring that impact” Draper explained during an interview. Which is exactly what makes this song so revolutionary. There are plenty of songs and art out there that portray mental illness and spread awareness which is important in itself, however there is a huge difference between letting people know that it’s a problem and telling people how the problem could be solved. Logic performed 1-800-273-8255 at the 2017 VMAs. After watching the incredibally moving performance, calls to the suicide hotline spiked by 50%. So many lives were saved because of that song.

The lifeline’s Director of Communications Francis Gonzalez chirped in, saying “Logic’s performance… delivered a positive message that has had and will continue to have a lasting impact. Sharing that healing and hope are possible helps individuals in crisis and changes the conversation around suicide from one of isolation to one of hope and connection”. Joining Logic on stage that night were suicide attempt survivors. They all wore shirts reading “you are not alone”, hoping to reach out to those who are in a crisis.

As the numbers show, it did just that. People really connected to the message of togetherness and that things will get better. No matter how horrible things may be, it is always possible to get through it.

Does that mean it is easy to get through? Of course not. But no one has to go through it alone.
