Hello, my name is Amala Chacko. I am a recent Temple University graduate. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. I am taking this class because it is required for my second bachelor’s degree in nursing. I am currently working towards my second bachelor’s in nursing with six more classes and a board exam until I receive my nursing license. My ultimate goal is to become a nurse practitioner. I wish I had some profound reason for why I want to become a nurse practitioner or the cliched reason most people give: “I want to save lives and help people”, but that’s not why I choose this profession. I stumbled upon the profession after doing some research during my last semester at Temple and decided to pursue a degree in nursing. After taking a couple of introductory nursing classes, I developed a passion for it.   
I believe this class will be especially helpful for me as a nurse. As medical professionals, nurses have their own set of ethical guidelines they must follow. As a nurse it is important to respect patients’ beliefs, their privacy, and protect all aspects of patients’ rights. Nurses would not be able to do this without distinguishing what is morally right or wrong. Nurses have to follow a strict set of ethical guidelines set for them if they wish to continue in the profession of nursing. If nurses choose to not follow these strict ethical guidelines, there are severe consequences that follow such as the loss of their license. I hope this class will give me the general rules for what is morally right and right wrong and add to my own set of moral values. 
I believe an ethics class allows students to explore the analyses of philosophers and others who have evaluated what is morally right and wrong and why they believe it is morally right or wrong. It may be based on religious beliefs and values or based on personal experiences and upbringing. It gives an ethical guideline to follow, a general rule of thumb. It may help students decide what course of action to take in difficult ethical situations based on these general rules. Ethics is not only used in difficult moral dilemmas, but also in everyday decisions and life. The class may teach what is socially acceptable, the social norm of ethics, based  on these ethical guidelines. The class may teach a set of standard moral values people may compare their own values to. 
I do not believe taking a course in ethics makes you more ethical. I believe it gives you a better understanding of what society considers to be morally right or wrong. It sets a standard of moral values for students to follow and compare to, but ultimately it is up to the person whether they want to follow that standard or not. It has a lot to do with student’s upbringing, personal experiences, and perhaps religious beliefs. I believe people develop their moral values from a young age based on what they see, hear, and are taught and society tells them if their moral values are acceptable or not. Society sets the standard for moral values and people follow. Students have their own set of moral values they follow before they ever take an ethics course. Those values may or may not change after taking an ethics course. However, I believe an ethics course gives students more insight into analyses of philosophers and scholars of ethics and the reasoning behind the standard set of moral values we compare our own moral values to.
