One of my
cousins has a 2 year old boy. She told me that children are very observant and
can learn things very quickly. Small children are natural copycats.
Preschoolers learn a lot by watching what we do and then trying it themselves —
whether it’s positive or negative. So it is very necessary for us to watch what
we do.

Research shows that if children start school
with a strong set of attitudes and skills that help them “learn how to
learn,” they will be better able to take advantage of educational
opportunities. While some learning skills come naturally to children, others
can be developed through a supportive environment.

What I’ve observed in the younger age group
of 2-5 years is that songs and rhymes are very helpful in teaching and
entertaining these tiny toddlers. Singing songs will help the child learn
through dances and actions and the opportunity to role play and dress up.

There are so many good reasons for using
music and rhymes with little children, but the most important is that it is
great fun for both the child and the parent, and that shared enjoyment is a
wonderfully bonding, positive experience. There is a limit to the amount of
meaningful conversation that is possible with a small child – songs and rhymes
provide non-demanding communication and create a happy, relaxed atmosphere in
the home. Certainly, by developing an early love for music it helps children to
develop the skills needed for learning. It increases concentration, confidence,
cognitive and memory skills. In other words, it builds a firm foundation for
education. But above all else it is fun!

With the
help of my cousin, I have chosen 5 videos that can be shown to a preschooler
which include counting, role play, storytelling, with plenty of actions and
movement, all invaluable tools for learning. The list is as follows:
(1) ABCD’s ( )
(2) Five little ducks ( )
(3) Old MacDonald had a farm ( )
(4) The Wheels on The Bus ( )
(5) Twinkle Twinkle little Star ( )

In the fourth video, “The Wheels on the Bus”, the girl who is singing the song
keeps asking questions. After watching the video for atleast 2-3 times, the kid
may start answering the questions along with the girl in the video, or may sing
along, or clap along the tune of the song. Every time my cousin’s son watches
the video, he starts jumping and laughing. This is the reason why
“The Wheels on the Bus” is on every playgroup’s favourite list;
the lively actions never fail to get everyone joining in!  Little toddlers
can grasp the simple and repetitive actions well before they can join in with
the words and there is plenty of opportunity for the older ones to improvise
with all sorts of extra actions.

What the child will learn from this activity?
(1) Imaginative moves to the music
(2) Rhythm recognition and developing a steady beat
(3) Speech development and Vocabulary
(4) Pitching notes and remembering the tune
(5) Motor Skills
(6) Remembering actions

Another aspect of these videos which is to be
considered is the colour of the video. Colour has a powerful affect on the mood
and behavior of the child. It is therefore, very important for us to consider
the dominant colour of the video before showing it to the child. Bright colours
such as red, yellow, blue, green, pink and white can attract the kid’s
attention and also promote a welcoming feeling. For ex. the colour of the bus
in the first video is bright, same is it with the animals and dress of the girl.

Children are more fascinated by those videos which
they can relate to- videos which show things they see and hear every day. The
video “The Wheels on the Bus”, shows a bus, its doors, its wheels, the driver,
the passengers, etc. It talks about what sounds each of these elements make. A
little child is familiar with these things and its sounds, which makes him
interested because children are always excited and curious to learn more.

Talking and listening are extremely valuable
for school success, and parents have countless opportunities to develop their
child’s language skills. It is therefore very important for parents to be very
careful about choosing the right kind of videos for their children and also
showing these videos in the correct sequence, so it is simple for the child to
learn and absorb the content. The right kind of videos can help the child learn
and grow.
