But before all this occurred, van Gogh lived a strenuous life. Hewas a poor, unknown artist who suffered from a mental disease and stayed unheardof throughout his own lifetime.
His passion for art allowed him to overcome theobstacles of his disorder. Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30th, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands. During his childhood, vanGogh had many artists to inspire him. Interestingly enough, he did not startpainting until the age of 27. Before becoming an artist van Gogh tried manyother careers, but he did not fit any of them. He failed to become a teacher, minister, art dealer, and missionary. After seeing these failures Theo, hisyounger brother, helped Vincent financially with his new art career.
In 1884,Vincent and Theo moved to Paris where van Gogh was widely influenced by theImpressionists. While in Paris, he used a vast array of bright colors insteadof dark ones. He even worked alongside of various famous artists. He failed touse impressionism in its most popular form. In 1888, he moved to Arles becausehe was not a fan of the city life in Paris. In Arles, van Gogh had more freedomto work with because of the bright landscape. Throughout his time in Arles, vanGogh was quite unsuccessful with his artwork and withthe artist Gauguin.
This was due to his mental instability that made him difficultto live with. To show his anger van Gogh took a razor and cut off his ear. Thisshowed his insanity and he was later sent to an insane asylum. While in the asylum he started painting in the hospital gardens. OnNovember 1889, he was requested to exhibit his paintings in Brussels. He sent atotal of 6 paintings, including his most famous paintings “Irises”and “Starry Night.” Althoughhe was not accepted during his lifetime, Vincent van Gogh’s work still thrivesto this day.
Van Gogh’s life is considered one of the most heartbreakingstories of all mankind. He sold only one of his paintings during his lifetime, suffered severe mental disorders, and was rejected by his own family. Thoughhis life was terrible it does not mean he was worthless. His art today is wellrespected and worth even millions of dollars to this date. His legacy lives onand many people can distinguish him from other famous artists. People believethat van Gogh took his pain and emotions to implement them into art. His abstractstyle of art has influenced artists to challenge themselves and go beyond the “traditional”style of art.
Not only had that, but he even changed the whole world. Van Gogh’sstory encourages everyone to follow their dream no matter what the cause maybe.
