Mitchell CalhounDialectical Journal 1Chapter 1 Quote: Page 2 “he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, way to bear drags his paws. His arms did not swing at his side, but hung loosely.”Analysis:Lennie is being compared to a large, violent animal sounds like a bear in which they are innocent unless provoked.Quote: Page 6 “what you want of a dead mouse anyways?” “I could pet it with my thumb, while we walked along,” said Lennie Analysis: -this shows how Lennie doesn’t view death of things the same way normal people in society do by petting and walking around with a dead mouse in his pocket the mouse. This also shows  how Lennie acts more like an animal then a human.Quote: Page 8 “Lennie said gently “George I ain’t got mine. I must’ve lost it” “you never had none, you crazy bastard. I got them both here”Analysis-Shows how George looks out for Lennie. Lennie is better with George around. Why does george stay around? Relatives?-George is forcing Lennie to fall into society’s norms by making him get rid of the dead mouse. Untimently george is trying to force lennie to be normal in order to protect himself and othersTheme: friends are important and you need to help someone one in need Chapter 2Quote: Page 26 “cutlets like a lot of little guys he hates big guys he’s all a time with picking scraps with big guys. Kinda like he’s mad at them because he ain’t big”Analysis-this shows how Curley dislikes Lennie it might be foreshadowing a future altercation between the two, curley is self conscious about his size uses his power to intimidate people  Quote: Page 29 ” well I think Curley married a tart” explains how cutlets wife might be unloyal foreshadowing a possible future affair that Curley might catch, might lead to fightQuote:Page 32″Hide in the brush by the river”Analysis: shows how Lennie is better off not saying or doing anything and he needs George’s help in his life. Might be a safe place for LennieQuote:Page 36 “Ain’t many guys travel around together” he mused,”I don’t know why”Analysis-points out George and lennie’s unusual relationship- making me question why George is helping Lennie out is it for good, self profit, a deal, etc…Theme: loyalty and self control is important to follow in your lifeDialectical Journal 2Chapter 3Quote: Page 38 “Slim turned on the…electric light. Instantly the table was brilliant with light”Analysis: I believe this shows how Slim brings goodness/pureness by turning on the light, Slim is a good guy. Potential friendship?Quote: page 39″Slim moved back slightly so the light was not on his face”Analysis: Shows how slim is more an observer than a talker questioning/ wanting to understand peopleQuote: page 40″used to play jokes on”im” “Analysis: George use to increase his confidence by messing around with Lennie’s stupidity. George might have been a very shallow person in the past. Foreshadowing that georges old habits might come back?Quote:page 44 “He ain’t no good to, you, Candy… Whynt you shoot him?”Analysis: Comparison, sounds similar to discussion of how Lennie is useless. Foreshadowing death due to not being useful to society/a nuisance. Quote: Page 63 “Lennie covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror”Analysis: Once again lennie is being compared to an animal. Lennie shows his strength which is a danger to society since he doesn’t know how strong he is compared to the typical person. Lennie snapped and turned Savage like but then he went back to being innocent once again.Theme: Don’t stereotype an individual until you see their true work ethic and understand where they come from.Chapter 4Quote: Page 68″Crooks, the negro stable buck, had his bunk in the harness room; a little shed that leaned off the barnAnalysis: Treated as if he’s a neglected/diseased animal. Shows racism. Shows how people need company or it drives a man crazyQuote: page 70 “Crooks interrupted brutally”Analysis: Shows even a black man has more power than lennie. Lennie is treated as if he’s not even close to being a human due to his animal like features and dumbness.Quote: Page 80 “If that’s all you want, I might get a couple rabbits myself”Analysis: Flirting with lennie. Refers to herloneleness and how she does doesn’t like curley. Wants attention. Future affair/altercation?Quote: Page 77 “She breathed strongly as though she had been running”Analysis: Shows desperation to not be lonely. She desires anyone to talk to because curley makes her isolated. Might foreshadow how she’s willing to to anything to get attention. Quote: “The rattly of the hatter chains”Analysis: Represents crooks slave heritage, and how he is still segregatedTheme: Don’t intrude into other people’s personal spaces, thoughts and feelings.Dialectical Journal 3Chapter 5Quote: Page 93 “His anger rose” “rocked himself back and forth”Analysis: Lennie is throwing a tantrum, shows immaturity. Also shows danger in society if he unleashes his “animal instincts”Quote: Page 94 “red ostrich feathers”Analysis: DANGER!!! Foreshadows curley’s wife death, flirtatious, drawing attention.Quote: Page 95 “I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely”Analysis: Confirmation Curley’s wife is unhappy with her current life, she might resort to leaving curley, loneliness might drive her to do something irrationalQuote: Page 95 “He was so little”Analysis: Lennie blamed the puppy’s death due to its tiny stature. But due to Lennie’s unsure strength he accidentally kills the puppy. Foreshadows Curley’s wife death due to her always approaching Lennie and both characters desire attention.Quote: Page 96-97″he was gonna put me in the movies”Analysis: Curley’s wife’s dream was to be a star, believes it was her mom’s fault, hiding the letter. Her dream is as hopeless as Candy’s. Lennie’s and george’s dream of owning a farm. Impossibility of american dream due to the characters situation.Quote: Page 98 “He’s such a nice fella” “Lennie never done it in meanness” Analysis: Describes Lennie’s savage tendencies but his gentleness, shows hoe lennie’s a victim of his own strength. Theme: Be cautious of individuals because you can never truly tell their desires/dangerous tendencies.Chapter 6Quote: Page 100 “suddenly Lennie appeared out of the brush, and he came as silently as a Creeping bear moves”Analysis: Lennie is described once again as an animal, like a bear. A bear is similar in that they are very gentle animals but can snap and be dangerous.Quote: Page 101 “Aunt Clara was gone, and from out of Lennie’s head there came a gigantic rabbit.”Analysis: Shows how Lennie can’t tell the difference between dream and reality, another dangerous characteristic since he cant reflect on the mistakes he made.Quote: Page 103 “George was silent”Analysis: George knows that he has to kill lennie, reflecting on experiences with lennie, comforting him, treating him like a childQuote: Page 104-105 “He said shakily, “take of your hat, Lennie”Analysis: George is nervous. Tries to act natural and not frighten Lennie, doesn’t want lennie to feel pain. Why does he make Lennie remove hat?Quote: Page 106 “The hand shook violently, but his face sat and his hand steadied.”Analysis: George know understands why he must kill Lennie, accepts it. This is an act of mercy in that it frees Lennie of his hard life and nonexistent futureQuote: Page 107 “Know what the hell ya suppose is eatin them two guys?”Analysis: Carlson can’t understand why george would be sad, he views lennie similar to candy’s filthy dog and that they got rid of a useless animal. Theme: Humans tend to have a predatory nature, this could be dangerous.
