Many people have heard about the ¨Long Walk to Freedom¨ but do not actually know what it was or the cause of it. The Long Walk to Freedom described how long the journey of protesting was until they got fair rights. Nelson Mandela made a huge impact on South Africans by fighting for rights and against apartheid. The president before Nelson Mandela made very harsh rules for blacks and did not stop or do anything about segregation and apartheid. This was an example of a compromise because he prevented history from repeating itself by making sure skin colors were integrated. An example of conflict was that lots of times when people protested they were arrested or punished in other ways. He sparked a global movement on human rights. The protests went from 1948 to 1991 when Africans were first able to vote. After equal rights were given, skin colors were integrated.  Nelson Mandela served as president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. His goal was to stop apartheid. Apartheid was racial segregation and the idea of keeping the relations of white people and ¨colored¨ people separate(sahistory.org). Apartheid was a problem from 1948 to 1991 (history.com). After the National Party took control, the all white government started to strongly enforce rules of racial segregation (history.com). Nelson Mandela helped spark a global movement. Many people were influenced by him to enforce fair, human rights. Segregation had been an issue for a while, nobody felt like they could do anything. Non white people in South Africa had been trying to resist apartheid for a while. (tavaana.org) ¨As the anti-apartheid movement gained international support, it gained strength from a series of campaigns: an academic boycott that banned South African universities and scholars, a sports boycott that banned South African teams from the World Cup and the Olympics…¨ (tavaana.org)Nelson Mandela was very forgiving and believed nobody should be judged. When he became president in 1994, he got rid of unfair rules. He also integrated black people and white people. Everyone got equal rights and black people had the same life opportunities that white people had. ¨In 1996 Mandela presided over the enactment of a new South African Constitution, which established a strong central government based on majority rule and prohibited discrimination against minorities, including whites.¨(history.com) Mandela lead ad influenced world protests for rights. Mandela was very generous and discouraged violence. When he was in jail after being thrown in after protesting, the guards agreed to let him go and leave if Mandela agreed to renounce violence and stop protesting. After he died, people gave things because they were influenced by him to make a difference. He showed that making a difference was possible. In 1994, Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president. Blacks and whites were integrated and got the same rights and opportunities as white people did. ¨He also introduced numerous social and economic programs designed to improve the living standards of South Africa´s black population.¨(history.com) After Mandela became president, black people got their first opportunity to vote in an election. Life was very different for everyone, because white people were not completely in charge. Colored people got new chances they had never had before. This is an example of a compromise because white people got the same rights as blacks and black people got better and fairer treatment but that they all were still treated the same and had the exact same laws.
