Sinkholes normally form due to the climate in the environment and/or can be manmade. Another thing that causes sinkholes is erosion. Erosion is the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves, etc ( Climate change will most likely increase the incidence of sinkhole formation in regions of Maryland that is susceptible. This is somewhat accurate because major climate trends have increased tremendously in the U.S. including perception, mean temperatures, sea levels, and maps showing mineral and sinkhole locations all in Maryland.To start off, according to the chart attached to our packet that displays major climate trends, Maryland has really extreme precipitation that have “caused heavy downpours especially over the last 30 to 50 years.” Studies demonstrates that perception are one of the main causes of sinkhole formation. According to, “As water drains below ground, it can dissolve subterranean caverns, particularly in areas where the bedrock is made of water-soluble evaporate rocks.” In Maryland precipitation has increased a lot, proving that precipitations is one of the main causes of sinkholes. Another example involves the changes in mean temperature. According to the chart labeled, Major Climate Trends, “temperatures in U.S. have risen from 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit to 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit since 1895.” Temperature has a lot to do with climate although climate is more on a long term basis. This proves how climate has a big impact on sinkhole formation. Once the temperatures go up, the likelihood of sinkhole formation rises as well.To add on, sinkholes can also occur by the sea level in a specific area. Studies from the Major Climate Trends chart display that, “Seal Level along the Mid-Atlantic and parts of the Gulf coast have risen by 8 inches over the last 50 years.” For instance on its states that “When sea levels rose at the end of the last glaciation, the sinkholes became submerged. The Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize is an example of an underwater sinkhole.” Sea levels play a big role in underwater sinkholes. Another example involves minerals. For example, at it talks about how, “Naturally occurring sinkholes are most commonly found in a type of terrain known as karst topography, which consists of bedrock (rock beneath the soil) filled with nooks and crannies. The underlying bedrock in karst landscapes is usually made of limestone. This demonstrates how minerals are one of the main causes of sinkholes.
