“It’s better late, than never.” One of the most simplistic and straightforward ways to summarize the message Al Gore was trying to convey in the American documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary was released in 2006 and featured former Vice President, Al Gore. The film encapsulates a highly informative and persuasive assertion regarding the trending and very realistic topic concerning global warming. He aimed to educate and persuade the public about the dangers that this issue was inflicting on the world and continues to reiterate how it is our duty and calling to act now and create change in our society before it is too late. As we closely analyze and evaluate this particular documentary, we are able to pinpoint the use of rhetorical strategies, special film techniques, and effects as well as other devices that were strategically calculated into the film in order to successfully leave viewers informed and ready to take initiative. The decisions made by the creators, were well thought out and effective in their execution of creating a film that not only hoped inform and teach the world of this growing epidemic, but to also instill within them a sense of drive and encouragement that forces us to change our ways and work towards a common goal together, as one. The inventors behind this documentary were graciously endowed in the department of filming techniques and editing modifications. The inclusion of these special effects allows the reader to have heightened emotions at specific times as well as to emphasizes on important details at necessary moments. When we carefully consider the music choice for this feature film we take notice in the fact that only instrumental music was used but specifically only at times in which the speaker would reminisce on the past — like when he discussed the near death of his sister. But we see that when the scene returns back to Al Gore live and on stage, there’s no music or sounds being played in the background. Instead, they chose to use the live audiences reactions and sounds as the alternative. By making this decision, the producers were aiming to portray a more raw and authentic interpretation of how people are reacting to this trending topic instead of using automated sound effects which they knew would not produce enough genuity. The film producers were also very particular and precise with their camera angles. When Al Gore would present his factual data and evidence the camera was positioned to capture a broader and enlarged angle of the showings as a design to highlight its importance. Even the tone and rhythm of the speaker’s voice shifts when he begins to do his voice-overs. His voice changes from being determined, vibrant and upbeat to a more gloomy, slow and sad tone. The obvious switch that he makes, makes it evident that he speaking in reference about what our world could potentially turn into if we allowing global warming to take over it. Al Gore’s decision to use statistical graphs and diagrams in this documentary was a very smart and meticulous choice to make. By incorporating the use of logic as a device, this produced a successful outcome in not only getting the message across but also because it was a great tool used to inflict concern within the listeners and to persuade the them that now is the time to take some initiative and put an end to global warming. To make viewers and listeners believe that his findings and research were ideal and true, he incorporated experts who went to highly accredited and prestigious universities like Professor Roger Revelle. This addition to the film showed that his data was well versed and factual. To emphasize the seriousness of the issue, the composers decided to enlarge the graphs and charts that Al Gore used as a reference, to underscore just how much bigger the problem is that we think. For instance, when Gore discusses the relationship that CO2 has with temperature inclement, he uses a lifting machine to show and literally point out how much CO2 levels have increased within the past 650,000 years and where we stand today. By utilizing the lift he was informing the audience that this growing issue is getting out of our reach and that we must act now before all hope is lost.During the creation of this documentary, the filmmakers, and the directors knew how imperative it would be to use the emotions of the audience as a method to expose them to the issues created due to the overheating of our planet earth. The use of tragic life stories, disappointing comparisons and terrifying images all play a role in working to evoke the audience’s emotions and awaken them to the new fate of our reality. Al Gore’s decision to talk about his son’s fatal passing was used as a technique to pull on the heartstrings of his listeners as well as to illustrate for them a loving father who cares about the youth and what life for them will be like tomorrow. The producers were also very skillful and crafty with their presentation of the earth’s viewings at the beginning and end of the film. They go from showing and talking about the beauty and importance of our home planet, to only showing a little pale blue dot to convey the message that this is our home and it’s the only one that we’ve got. This particular comparison worked as a tool to elicit an emotional response because it forced people to grasp the concept that we only get one try at this and if we mess that up then the consequences are on us cause well have no one else to blame. Our emotions are also exploited with when the topic of Hurricane Katrina is introduced. The horrifying aftermath images and heart-wrenching video clips from the storm all work together to effectively to make us feel regret and grief for the lives that were lost all which he suggests could’ve been avoided if we would’ve put forth a little more effort into taking care of the earth. The choices that we make on a daily basis determine who we are and how others perceive us. These are the exact thoughts that filmmakers must take into account when they go through the process of creating motion pictures, and director Davis Guggenheim, most certainly considered the perception of his Documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” when it was in the making. The skillfully planned out articulation of this film allows for the presentation to be successful in its agenda to make people realize and acknowledge the reality of the issue at hand and to motivate us to take some course of action and fix this problem that we bought amongst ourselves. The masterminds behind the evolution of An Inconvenient Truth used rhetorical strategies, film editing skills and other devices aiding in persuasion to effectively shine a light on this growing epidemic we call global warming and finally put an end to it, cause like they say, “it’s better late than never.”
