“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King Jr. Racism has taken on several forms in America over the past several hundred years. Luther was and continues to be one of the most influential people that have ever lived. His thoughts and dreams of a day when all people will live together in harmony are still not accomplished. Now, it is obvious that racism isn’t as bad as it was a hundred years ago, but it sure has not gone away. There is surely no nation in the world that holds “racism” in greater horror than does the United States. Racism is talked about every day. Unfortunately, many people are unaware how constant racism has been throughout the years. It is important to understand the problems of racism because it is relevant and happens much more often in today’s society. “We all bleed the same color.” said by Madonna Ciccone. People involving the idea that their race is superior and has the right to rule others is why racism exists in today’s world. Although people from many races might feel superior to others, truth is, we are all equal. People with significant power have endured racism throughout the Country. The President has spread racism in his first year of office. The President of The United States has significant power, he believes since he runs the country he is superior to everyone and puts his race before everything. Stereotypes are a huge part of racism. Not everything is ought to be the way people say it, but stereotypes definitely bring much more racism into the country. America is supposed to be “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” America’s population was built on immigration; with the high standard of living associated with life in America, many different cultures have landed upon its shores. While this has brought a lot of good to the country, it has unfortunately resulted in racism.America is a very diverse country. It is beyond beautiful witnessing many different cultures and races represented in America. Also, we have many people that are adapting to different cultures and race rather than their own. Although many people know racism exists, others think it is false information. Racism in America needs to be understood, people need to take a big step and acknowledge that it definitely is a problem in today’s society and still exists. Unfortunately, racism will not end anytime soon when all ignorant people are content with the way things are.In 1892, the Supreme Court passed a law that forced blacks and whites to sit in separate train cars, use different bathrooms, and go to different schools. This started segregation. Furthermore, in 1921, Congress also restricted immigration to decrease racial diversity. Martin Luther King Jr decided he wanted to make a difference in the fight against segregation. He began leading peaceful marches and played an important role against segregation. Due to his and others efforts, segregation was finally made illegal in schools. This not only proves we can fight racism but also proves we do not need to fight with violence but rather with love. In 2017, racism seemed to spread more than usual causing our country to be divided. The sad part is, 100 years later we still have racism in America. People with power have made comments about other races that have spread more and more racism and discrimination throughout our nation. It is truly sad how divided we have become as a country. America has offered many opportunities for immigrants. They wanted better jobs, more money, and most of all they wanted the freedom to express themselves how they wish. Immigrants should have the right to come to America and become one of us. They aren’t here to do harm, they are here to experience life to its fullest. Unfortunately, there is a lot of discrimination and stereotypes said about immigrants. Stereotypes affect people in many different ways. There are two sides to stereotypes, the victims, and their aggressors. Many victims of stereotypes can cause people to lose confidence in oneself and many others in a psychological way, which can damage social and personal development. The amount of stereotyping in today’s society has divided us as a country. Race should not be stereotyped, we are all equal and all one important race, we are the human race. We should all understand that there will be differences and that we should be sensitive to other cultures around the world. While many people deny that racism exists, there is plenty of history on racism. Back in 1917, the “negro silent protest parade” was held in New York where 10,000 African American gathered on July 28, 1917, wearing white and carrying banners or American flags. The silent parade was described as “one of the most quiet and orderly demonstrations ever witnessed.” The silent protest parade not only shows courage but also what power it can have on people while they are fighting for their rights. One hundred years later, African Americans are still fighting for their beliefs and race. “Black lives matter” movement has been a huge highlight of 2017. This movement has been to demonstrate the racist violence against black people throughout American history. The black lives matter movement has spread all over America to spread equality for African Americans. The people in this moment have spoken out about racial inequality and call attention to the importance of black lives. Despite all the racism in America, it is time to make a change. Throughout all the division in our country, racism is the main reason to blame for. People with power should take action in making a difference rather than bringing us down as a whole. There will always be hatred and discrimination around the world but people who believe they are superior to others should not promote hatred even more. The biggest problem in today’s society is how many people ignore the problems we are facing and pretend like racism in our country doesn’t exist. It is beyond surreal how looking back at 100 years ago, racism is still such a huge problem in society. Although there is not a clear solution to end racism, it is affecting the way people live. Throughout the last couple of months, people have been turning against one another because of their race. Although no race is better than another race, people have to understand we are all equal and all a part of the human race. In conclusion, everyone is affected by racism all around the world. It will be very hard to end racial discrimination for good but people with power that can inspire should take action. Those who are in a position to lead should spread positivity and equality throughout our nation. Hopefully one day, to those who are grieving and in fear, receive the equality they deserve.
