I chose this topic because i was intrigued as to how extremely small
materials would be used in hospitals and in research facilitates and wanted to
know more information.




What are they: Nanomaterials are chemical substances or materials that
are manufactured and used at a very small scale. The average size of a
nanomaterial can range from 1 to 100 nanometres. They are developed to display
characteristics of the same material without nanoscale features, these characteristics
include increased strength and chemical reactivity or conductivity.  




What Is It: It is the study and application of extremely small things,
such as nanomaterials, and can be used across all science


How can it be used in medicine: Nanotechnology in medicine involves the
application of nanomaterials currently under development, as well as longer
range research that involves the use of manufactured Nano-robots to make
repairs at the cellular level.




Is it yet in use: As of right now the only kind of nanotechnology being
used is nano-sponges. Nano-sponges were developed by researches to absorb
toxins and remove them from the bloodstream. The sponges are made out of
polymer nanomaterials and they are coated with a red blood cell membrane, this
allows them to travel freely in the bloodstream and attract the toxins. This will
make it much easier for doctors to treat cancer and other diseases alike within
a day or maybe even minutes.


There are many other branches of nanotechnology but they are all still
currently under development. Some of the branches are Drug delivery,
Antimicrobial techniques and one of the major branches is Cell repair.




Nanotechnology in the drug delivery branch revolves around creating nanoparticles
that deliver drugs, heat, light or other substances to specific types of cells,
such as cancer cells. The particles are engineered so that they will be
attracted to disease cells, which will allow them to directly treat those cells
without having to damage other healthy cells in the body and will allow for
earlier detection of the disease. This will allow doctor to quickly and easily
get treat cancer, anaemia, Huntington’s disease and sickle cell disease.




Right now many researchers are developing ways of eliminating bacteria,
some of these methods involve using gold nanoparticles and infrared light to better
clean instruments in hospitals, treating antibiotic resistant infections with
quantum dots or using polymer coated iron oxide nanoparticles as a way of
eliminating chronic bacterial infections. This branch of Nanotechnology shows
great promise as it will allow doctors to instantly eliminate bacterial
infections in a patient within minutes instead of giving the patient
antibiotics which will take weeks to fully eliminate the infection.




As of right now there are no such thing as nano-robots but in the future,
they could be the key to cellular repair. A nano-robot is a robot that is the
size of a nanometre and can be programmed to repair specific diseased cells,
much like antibodies function right now. Through the use of nano-bots doctors can
repair bones, neural tissue and maybe in the future regrow human organs.

Nano-bots are the future and will enable humans to live longer and better lives
and maybe even be immortal if scientist figure out how to repair telomeres.






Nanotechnology will be an extremely important part of medicine in the
future as it will make surgery higher tech and more effective when it comes to
quickly and efficiently restoring a patient’s health no matter what they have
been diagnosed with. Nanotechnology will allow doctors to deal with diseases
such as cancer or even Huntingtins disease. Doctors will also have the ability
to make repairs to the human body at a cellular level, meaning they could fix
neural tissue and repair bones. Nanotechnology could also be the key to humans
becoming immortal because scientist could figure out how to repair telomeres using
