Good morning fellow cadets, judges and parents. I am LAC Jensen and my topic is Humor is the best medicine. I’m gonna start us off with a few jokes:What do you call a cow with no legs?Ground beefTwo snare drums and a cymbal fall off a cliff… ba dum tsss Did you know that you can stay relaxed for 45 minutes after laughing? Laughing boosts your immune system, improves your mood and helps reduce or prevent stress. Let’s talk about how it affects your mood for a moment, have you ever tried to be mad or angry while someone is making you laugh? Well, it doesn’t work, believe me, I’ve tried, why this doesn’t work is because when you laugh your brain releases chemicals called endorphins which makes you feel good and when you feel good you can’t be angry. Another good example of this would be with babies when they start crying or aren’t happy you could start making funny faces, which then leads to the baby laughing then being happy when the baby is happy and laughing you might start to feel happy as well. Endorphins are only released when it is a big belly laugh, so if you are just giggling you probably won’t feel as happy after compared to a big laugh. Endorphins can temporarily relieve pain, and that is why children’s hospitals bright and cheery, and inspirational people come to visit occasionally like the Calgary Flames as well as the Stampeders. There are therapy dogs that visit children’s hospitals because it cheers up the kids. My school has just recently got a therapy dog and at recess I see quite a few kids laughing, changing and playing with him.There was a study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor live longer versus people who didn’t laugh as much, this is particularly noticeable in those who are battling diseases like cancer. I have experienced this first hand when my aunt was battling cancer, they always made fun of eachother wearing the gloves and masks and doing weird and funny stufIt is proven that kids are more relaxed and their pain tolerance is higher after watching a funny video. There is such thing as laughter yoga, and laughter or humor therapy, it is slowly becoming more popular in the US and some other countries. Laughter yoga or laughter therapy is where you basically go to a place to laugh and have fun. Laughter yoga is specifically helpful for those suffering from depression. Laughing increases blood flow which lowers your chance of cardiovascular problems,  another benefit of laughing would be that increases your energy allowing you to stay focused for longer. A good way to laugh is to try and laugh at yourself so share embarrassing moments with others. I’m not saying walk up to a stranger and be like “hey you wanna hear an embarrassing story of me,”I’m talking about with your friends or family. An embarrassing story of yourself could help cheer up your friends as well as yourself.Laughing 100 times is equivalent to 15 minutes on a stationary bicycle, laughing burns calories if you laugh often enough you could lose about 3-4 pounds a year. If you say humor is the best medicine I would have to agree with you, laughter is a great way to connect with people
