Globalization is growing increasingly rapidly because of free
trade and internet.  As a result, languages are disappearing faster than
before. Besides, it is predictable that modern technologies, the web will deepen
this communication to incredible limits. The ubiquitous nature of English
as the world’s global trade language is certainly convenient for
English-speaking countries.  But the fact that it remains the global
language of business creates a dispute in certain circles. Multinational
companies such as Daimler, Samsung, SAP, Airbus are mandating English as the
corporate language to facilitate communication across all its geographic and
diverse units.1

 With China’s growing
economic might, the Chinese government is promoting Mandarin through its
Confucius Institute network. Prevalence in the world of web is probably the
acid test to anticipate which will be the vehicular languages of the future.

For now, again, English has reigned and it seems it will become even more
widely used. The British Council reports that, by 2020, 2 billion people will
be studying English, because they believe it “a basic skill needed for the
entire workforce, in the same way, that literacy has been transformed in the
last two centuries from an elite privilege into a basic requirement for
informed citizenship.”2


Way Forward


Adopting a global language policy
is difficult and cumbersome, and organizations perpetually stumble along the
way. It’s radical, and we will face staunch resistance from native employees.

Just knowing the language doesn’t place you in advantage position, but also how
well you know the language is critical. Many may feel that their English isn’t
as good as others’, team performance and dynamics can suffer. But to endure and
thrive in a global economy, companies must overcome language barriers—and
English will almost always be the common ground, at least for now. There’s no
doubt that multilingualism is inefficient and cumbersome. The need to
efficiently map all the tasks and work with customers and partners worldwide
has augmented the move toward English as the official language of business
irrespective of where companies are headquartered.  Talking about the
future, I think the students of present and managers of tomorrow should be able
to communicate in at least two vehicular languages, in addition to their own
native one. Vehicular languages are the key to open other cultures. A majority
of the people speak English; it will take centuries to replace it with
some other power language. So, in my opinion, the English language will remain
as the global language despite globalization.
