Gandhi was a great person in life some might call him a hero or just someone that wants humanity to be together. I agree with what anyone wants to say about him as long as it’s positive. He helped get india to independence also the salt tax to be taken off and even put up with racist things said to him when in south africa. I will be hitting some background information about gandhi then moving one to his later life then ending with his speech on the salt march.I am going to start off with some background knowledge about who gandhi is and things he has done in life. Mohandas Gandhi was a man of great wisdom and leadership. He preached about non violent injustice, the main thing he wanted was to have peace and equality in everyone life not just his. He started off probably like any normal child, he went to school, his parents pushed his to get a good education and he did. The Inner temple is where he practiced his law to become a lawyer. This was the beginning of his great story, the first thing he did was employed nonviolent civil disobedience as a lawyer in South Africa. He went to africa when he was a 24 year old on May 1893,  It is here that Gandhi experienced a lot of racism from the people but he didn’t let it affect him he actually was open to what was happening. This was when he first developed his ideas of nonviolent protest to stop the things that were happening.  However it is also here where he illustrated his class and racial prejudices against both his fellow Indians and Africans. These next few paragraphs are some summaries and my ideas on some of the things that took place during the salt march. Mohandas Gandhi Started off the march from his religious retreat Sabermanti near Ahmedabad with only a couple of followers. The trek to the sea where the salt is, is 240 miles from where they are at. While on his journey more and more people joined when he went to diffrent places giving speeches about the law. Which being that there was a tax on the salt making it more harder for indians to survive. And salt being one of the most important aspects in indian food and also you need salt to survive ( salt march were called many diffrent things like Dandi march or salt satyagraha. India was prohibited to produce or sell salt because of the series of laws put in by the british government. Not only did gandhi get arrested but another important figure got arrested to, Jawaharlal Nehru the first prime minister of india was one too.(. Just before going on his big journey, gandhi sent a letter to Raj being the leader of viceroy. Telling him their actions they are going to take which being going to the salt mines and taking the salt to protest. Gandhi hired an englishman that believed in the indian movement to take the letter to the viceroy. Starting out with 73 men which are also satyagrahis(activists of truth and resolution) started walking. It took them a whooping 23 days to get to where they wanted to protest. Which continued for another 2 months after the first protest people coming from a lot of places even from the coastal cities like Bombay and Karachi. ( I think that gandhi being able to take the first step and helping others is great. Being that nobody else was willing to stand up to an unjust law just like MLK. Yes it took shorter time but still the same concepte. He begins off with saying that this is going to be his last speech today or forever. Meaning that the british government could turn violet with attacking the people of india to stop the marches because they are technically breaking the law by producing salt by picking it up. Gandhi goes on to say that I have lead you here and now it is your time to take what is yours and be the one to continue what they were lead to, If you look back to the paragraph before this it tells you that many people did continue on going and getting the salt. This is only part of the speech  In all probability this will be my last speech to you. Even if the Government allow me to march tomorrow morning, this will be my last speech on the sacred banks of the Sabarmati. Possibly these may be the last words of my life here.I have already told you yesterday what I had to say. Today I shall confine myself to what you should do after my companions and I are arrested. The programme of the march to Jalalpur must be fulfilled as originally settled. The enlistment of the volunteers for this purpose should be confined to Gujarat only. From what I have been and heard during the last fortnight, I am inclined to believe that the stream of civil resisters will flow unbroken. But let there be not a semblance of breach of peace even after all of us have been arrested. We have resolved to utilize all our resources in the pursuit of an exclusively nonviolent struggle. Let no one commit a wrong in anger. This is my hope and prayer. I wish these words of mine reached every nook and corner of the land. My task shall be done if I perish and so do my comrades. It will then be for the Working Committee of the Congress to show you the way and it will be up to you to follow its lead. So long as I have reached Jalalpur, let nothing be done in contravention to the authority vested in me by the Congress. This was many of great speeches that gandhi gave to the people. But in fact it was his last speech. When gandhi lead all of the people to take the salt from the british it was about a 100 or so days that it took. Many people joined his march, over 60,000 people joined, also many people continued going and taking salt after that march. But being so that he lead the people he gave the speech and 6 months later he was killed tragically back a hinduist extremist.
