During the Holocaust, Jews had experiments done on them to test and improve German medicines. Dr. Rascher and Dr. Mengele were ordered to perform these experiments on Jews because Hitler didn’t want to risk his German citizens’ lives. The three main experiments the Nazis were to perform were tests on twins, looking at genetics, and freezing and warming body temperatures. With twin experiments everything the examiners did to one twin they did to the other to see if the same result occurred. When experimenting with genetics the examiners found that Gypsies had different blood completely and executed immediately because they were thought to be evil. If a victim was impure German, they were considered un-pure.To be pure German means their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were all pure German blood as well. When using freezing and hypothermia experiments Nazis would test the temperatures at which bodies froze and thawed. Many Germans were freezing to death fighting in Russia and needed a way stop them from freezing to death, By examining twin experimentation, genetic experiments, and the experimentation of freezing and causing hypothermia, it will be evident the experiments done on Jews were inhumane and harmful to many Jewish prisoners and often caused death. When experimenting with twins it became evident Mengele found many experiments to try, and was often more interested in one twin over the other. Mengele was often found to try different experiments on twins such as sewing them together to try making siamese twins, inject blood from twin into the other, take exact measurements of 1the twins to find differences, or test the effects of various drugs or poisons. Approximately 1,500 sets of twins were tested on but unfortunately only 200 survived. “Dr. Mengele had always been more interested in Tibi. I am not sure why – perhaps because he was the older twin. Mengele made several operations on Tibi. One surgery on his spine left my brother paralyzed. He could not walk anymore. Then they took out his sexual organs. After the fourth operation, I did not see Tibi anymore. I cannot tell you how I felt. It is impossible to put into words how I felt. They had taken away my father, my mother, my two older brothers – and now, my twin …” (The evolution of medical ethics) This shows how hard it was to be a twin that Mengele was less interested in because they were to sit back and watch the torture their sibling had to go through. Overall Mengele tortured twins, and was obsessed with finding similarities and differences.By looking at experimentation of genetics, it became evident that they couldn’t change a person’s genes. Mengele attempted to change eye colour by injecting chemicals into people’s eyes, perform sex change operations, without any anesthesia, and remove organs and limbs to examine them and the aftermath. “The experiment was done to me in Auschwitz, Block 10. The experiment was done on my uterus. I was given shots in my uterus and as a result of that I was fainting from severe pain for a year and a half. Years later, Professor Hirsh from the hospital in Tzrifin examined me and said that my uterus became as a uterus of a 4-year-old child and that my ovaries shrank.” (Ms. A) (http://www.claimscon.org) The aftermath of this scenario was quite devastating due to 2the pain this woman was put through, not only during the procedure, but for years after as well. By examining freezing and thawing procedures, it became evident that the Germans were losing too many soldiers in the Russian battle due to freezing temperatures and had to find a way to keep their soldiers from freezing to death. Finding the temperatures at which bodies froze included procedures such as placing a probe in the victim’s rectum with an expandable metal ring on the end, expanding once inside the body then, the people would be put in icy vats or put outside in freezing weather completely naked. The icy vat was proven to be the fastest method of freezing but by the time they thawed the bodies, the majority of them were dead. Thawing methods included victims being placed under a sun lamp that would burn boils on the skin, being placed in a hot bath, or by using the body heat of other humans. “One part of the experiments was the freezing experiment. In it, the Nazis would put a prisoner into artic cold water while recording the effect it had on the body. This research was used help the Nazi soldiers combat the cold in countries where temperature was near arctic like Russia.” (http://holocaustprojet.weebly.com) The freezing of bodies was a brutal procedure to try and find a way to help German soldiers fight in war without dying by freezing to death. When looking at experimentation done to Jews, it is evident freezing and thawing, twin experiments and genetic experiments caused death to many Jews during the Holocaust. This is significant to the war because some experiments were to help German 3soldiers stay alive while fighting in Russia. The Jewish experiments also affected the war because a great number of experiments performed on children, and many were killed, so they were unable to contribute to the war when they grew up.
