Bryan Bjerke Honors Cultural Foundations 1A/B O’Connell/Ash 21 January, 2018 How Enlightenment Thinkers Would Critique SocietyThere are any Enlightenment thinkers with many different ideas, and some would agree with the ideas of the boys in Lord of the Flies while others will disagree. Two of these Enlightenment thinkers would be John Locke and Rousseau, and they both have suggestions to make the society on the island better. The Enlightenment thinker Rousseau would agree with their society because he believes people are good but corrupted by society. In the beginning everyone was good and kind to each other, but as Jack became more corrupt, it led to everyone becoming corrupt until everyone was bad. Rousseau would not agree with their rules and how they make them because rules in Lord of the Flies were decided by one person, Ralph. An example of this is when Ralph is making rules about their speaking rights. “‘And another thing. We can’t have everybody talking at once. We’ll have to have ‘Hands up’ like at school.’ He held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth. ‘Then I’ll give him the conch.’ ‘Conch?’ ‘That’s what this shell called. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking.'”(Lord of the Flies 25) This rule is saying that the only way someone can talk while on this island is if that person has the conch shell. Ralph is the only one who decides the rules on the island, therefore, Rousseau would not agree with how the rules are put into place on the island because Rousseau believes in a direct democracy, which is a form of government where everyone has to vote on everything. Therefore, Rousseau would change it so that everyone will to vote on the rules. Rousseau would agree with their actions in the beginning because everyone was helping to make the society better, such as hunting for food. “‘We’ll get food,’ cried Jack. ‘Hunt. Catch things. until they fetch us'”(Lord of the Flies 22). Jack is willing to go hunt food for the civilization. As the story progressed Rousseau would not like the boys actions because they are making the society worse because the boys are doing things to hurt the society, such as killing each other. So, Rousseau would suggest making the boys actions more helpful to their society. Another thinker that would make suggestions to the society is John LockeA second Enlightenment philosopher to critique the society, rules and actions of the boys on the island would be John Locke. Locke would enjoy the society in the beginning because the boys on the island were nice and kind to each other, but Locke would suggest the boys to stay kind to each other in the middle and the end when everyone is turning savage and evil. He would suggest that because Locke believes that everyone is naturally good. Locke would strongly disagree with the boys rules because the rules are making it impossible for the boys to do whatever they want. “‘So remember. The rocks for a lavatory. Keep the fire going and smoke showing as a signal. Don’t take fire from the mountain. Take your food up there'” (Lord of the Flies 62). Ralph is making all of these rules for good intentions, but it deprives the people of their right to do whatever they want. So, Locke would adjust their society to make it so that the boys can do whatever they want. Locke would not agree with their actions because their actions are not showing how humans are naturally good. An example of this is when Ralph and Piggy are talking with Jack and his tribe, when all of a sudden a rock is dropped on Piggy. “‘The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee'” (Lord of the Flies 141). Jack and his tribe just killed Piggy by smashing a boulder on his head. Therefore, Locke would suggest that all of the boys do not go off killing each other. These different Enlightenment thinkers have different ideas, but all of these different ideas are for the same purpose, to make the boys society better.
