Purpose of study

purpose of study is aimed to determine the effect of intermittent LED compared
with daily meal replacements on weight-loss maintenance and number of knee
replacements over 3 years.



Methods or Scope of Study



Obese patients with knee osteoarthritis over 3 years.

Both Men & Women

Age 50+

Weight BMI of 33.3 obese

Non – athletic


The study was conducted by participants with the use of LED or daily use of
meal replacements assisted with dietary group counseling, based of dietary and
behavioral interventions led by a dietitian (18 visits/y) focusing on weight
loss and maintenance. Formula weight loss products were also used. The main
goal was weight loss in the Carot study.


C.    Two-Dimensional
photon absorptiometry, X-ray absorptiometry scans, DPX IQ Full Body Bone densitometer
body weight was measured on a digital scale (TANITA BW-1800) and blood pressure
measured with mercury’s sphygmomanometer



D.   Two
group Intermittent group and the regular group. The intermittent group were
offered 3 intensive weight loss periods/y each lasting’s 5 week during participants
were provided with meal replacements. The regular group participants in the regular
(RE) group were offered the use of 1-2 formula diet products daily throughout
the 3y thereby reducing the daily energy intake by substituting 1-2 meals.



Results or Findings of the Study


1.      The
doctors who performed this study based it off of formula fed boys.

Out of 159 participants only 153 finished
the study.

2.      Mean
weight loss was 10.3 and 10.6 Kg in both the intermittent and regular groups. These
two groups had about the same dropout rates, and only 109 finished the 3-year
weight maintenance study.   

3.      There
was a negative 1.06 Kg difference in body weight from the two groups.

4.      There
was a negative 2.55 Kg difference in weight maintenance at the one-year assessment
in the IN group.





1.      In
the end, there was a 10% weight loss and 1-year maintenance. More usage of
daily meal replacements or intermittent LED resulted in weight loss for 3
