As the university possesses a very limited
accommodation facilities and according to the number of students who will be
provided with hostel facilities has to be decided by the welfare committee of the university. There are some special reasons that
students get compulsorily the hostel facilities such as special medical reasons
and members who get samurdhi beneficiaries.
As hostels are inadequate, hostel facilities are also
not enough for the students in university of Sri Jayewardenepura. In hostels, students need many
facilities for their studies and day today activities. Mainly they need enough water,
electricity, beds, cupboards, tables & chairs, fans, washrooms to do their
studies well. They
need these kinds of facilities adequately. Unless they have enough facilities
they might face various problems.
According to our research, the majority of the students who
stay in the hostels feel that these facilities are not provided adequately for
is a complex procedure for selecting students who are eligible to get the

regarding the hostel facilities.
Ø Sometimes water supply is cut off
without any prior notice. As a result of this, students face lot of inconveniences
in their day today life.
Ø Students can not use other electrical
equipment apart from the provided equipment by the hostel.
Eg: Irons, Heaters
Ø Due to the lack of rooms, many students
have to stay in a one small room.
Ø In many hostels, students have not
enough irons and water boilers for their use.
Ø In boys’hostels, their safety is very poor. Doors and windows are broken but not

Due to lack of hostel facilities, students cannot do
their studies properly. And also it might affect to their physical wellbeing
and the mental wellbeing as well. There is a tendency that the students will not be
able to do their studies continuously. So we can see the main objective of attending to the
university, would not be full filled because of these kinds of issues that are
taken place in the hostels. And also the resources may be wasted in this kind of
situations where, there are no benefits to the society when compared to the
cost that the government has incurred. So to overcome this situation we hope to target this
